How do I enable hand tracking on the Vive XR Elite?

The hand tracking feature on the Vive XR Elite lets you use your hands directly within the virtual environment, without controllers. This feature is useful for navigating menus, interacting with certain applications, or improving user comfort. It must be enabled manually in the headset settings.

1. Access the headset settings

  1. Press the button to display the main menu.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Go to Input or Interaction.
  4. Select Hand Tracking.

2. Enable hand tracking

  1. Enable the Hand Tracking option.
  2. Remove or set down the controllers to avoid conflicts.
  3. Place your hands in front of you, about 30 to 60 cm from the headset.
  4. Keep your hands within the cameras’ field of view, in front of you and not to the sides.

The headset uses its cameras to automatically detect your hands at this point.

3. Learn the basic gestures

Once hand tracking is active, you can interact with the interface:

  • Point with your index finger to target an item.
  • Make a pinch (index finger + thumb) to click.
  • Hold the pinch to select or move.

These gestures replace controller actions in compatible menus.

4. Optimize hand tracking

To ensure tracking works properly:

  • Use the headset in a well-lit environment.
  • Avoid overly uniform backgrounds, such as a white wall or low-contrast surfaces.
  • Keep your hands visible and facing the headset.

If tracking is unstable, simply reposition your hands in front of you.

The Vive XR Elite’s hand tracking can be quickly enabled in the headset settings and allows you to interact without controllers. By positioning your hands correctly in the field of view and using basic gestures, you can navigate the interface more naturally.
