How to install APK files on the Meta Quest 3S?
Installing APK files on the Meta Quest 3S gives access to apps not available on the Meta Horizon Store, including prototypes, development tools, or alternative experiences. This method, called sideloading, requires enabling developer settings and using a dedicated tool.
1. Enable developer mode
Before installing APKs:
- Open the Meta Quest mobile app.
- Go to Menu > Devices, and select your headset.
- Navigate to Advanced Settings > Developer Mode.
- Enable Developer Mode.
If the option is missing, register for a free developer account at developers.meta.com/horizon. Restart the headset to activate it.
2. Download and install SideQuest on your PC
SideQuest is the go-to tool for sideloading:
- Go to https://sidequestvr.com and download the version for your system (Windows, macOS, or Linux).
- Install the software.
- Launch SideQuest.
3. Connect the headset to your PC via USB-C
- Plug the Meta Quest 3S into your computer using a USB-C cable.
- In the headset, approve the USB debugging request and trust the device.
- SideQuest will show a green indicator once connected.
4. Load the APK file into SideQuest
Once connected:
- Click the APK install icon (downward arrow) in the SideQuest top bar.
- Select the APK file from your computer.
- Installation starts instantly and finishes with a confirmation message.
5. Launch the installed app
APK apps won’t appear in the regular Library:
- Go to Meta > Library > Sources > Unknown.
- The SideQuest-installed app will appear there.
- Launch it like any standard app.
6. Update or remove an APK manually
To update an app, simply reinstall a newer version of the same APK.
To remove it:
- Go to Settings > Apps > Unknown.
- Select the app and tap “Uninstall”.
To install APK files on the Meta Quest 3S, you need to enable Developer Mode, use SideQuest, and connect the headset to a PC via USB-C. It’s a powerful method to access alternative apps, as long as you follow the steps carefully to avoid errors.
