How to adjust IPD on Vive Focus Vision?

Interpupillary distance (IPD) is the distance between the centers of your two pupils. A proper IPD adjustment is essential for a clear and comfortable image, to reduce eye strain, and to avoid visual distortion in virtual reality. The Vive Focus Vision offers both automatic and manual IPD adjustments.

1. Why is it important to adjust the IPD?

  • An incorrectly adjusted IPD can cause a blurry image, dizziness, and eye fatigue.
  • The headset lenses are optimized for a specific central point, known as the sweet spot in VR. Proper alignment ensures clear and natural vision.
  • Precise IPD adjustment enhances immersion and visual comfort during long sessions.

2. How to adjust the IPD on the Vive Focus Vision?

You can adjust the IPD via the system settings of the Vive Focus Vision:

Automatic IPD adjustment:

  1. Go to the menu: from the Lobby, select Settings > General > IPD (interpupillary distance).
  2. Enable the “Automatic IPD adjustment” option.
  3. Select “Start” next to “Auto-adjust IPD”.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

Manual IPD adjustment:

  1. Go to Settings > General > IPD (interpupillary distance).
  2. Select “Adjust” next to “Manual IPD adjustment”.
  3. Use the volume buttons or the + and – icons to adjust the IPD.
  4. Focus on the vertical lines displayed on-screen: Adjust the IPD until the lines appear sharp and aligned. If the image is sharper for one eye than the other, slightly reposition the headset.
  5. Note the IPD value for future reference.

Tip: You can also adjust the IPD via the VIVE Menu > Settings > Adjust IPD.

Warning: Do not manually move the lenses, as it may damage the automatic mechanism.

3. How to measure your IPD?

If you don’t know your IPD, here are three methods to estimate it:

Ask an optometrist (most accurate method):

  • A vision professional can accurately measure your IPD.

Measure your IPD with a ruler and mirror:

  1. Stand in front of a mirror with a millimeter ruler.
  2. Align the zero mark with the center of your right pupil.
  3. Note the measurement in millimeters corresponding to the center of your left pupil.
  4. Repeat the process a few times to ensure accuracy.
  5. You can also ask someone else to take the measurement for greater precision.

Estimate your IPD through VR experimentation:

  1. Go to Settings > General > IPD (interpupillary distance).
  2. Select “Manual IPD adjustment”.
  3. Look at the vertical lines displayed on-screen.
  4. Gradually adjust the IPD using the + and – buttons until the image becomes sharp.
  5. Note the IPD value for future use.

Tip: Some apps and websites can also estimate your IPD, but their accuracy may vary.

Proper IPD adjustment improves sharpness and visual comfort in VR. The Vive Focus Vision allows both automatic and manual adjustment via settings.

It’s recommended to know your exact IPD for the best results. A well-adjusted IPD reduces eye strain and enhances image clarity, ensuring a more immersive and enjoyable VR experience.
