How to set up the play area boundary for safely using Vive Focus Vision?

To avoid accidents and ensure an immersive VR experience, it’s essential to properly set up your play area by defining a safety boundary. The Vive Focus Vision allows you to create multiple play areas and choose between a stationary mode or a room-scale mode.

1. Necessary preparations

Before setting up your play area, make sure to:

  • Avoid obstacles: Ensure your play space is free of furniture, objects, or pets that could interfere with your movements.
  • Ensure proper lighting: Avoid environments that are too dark, as they may affect headset tracking.
  • Have enough space: For room-scale mode, make sure you have at least 1.5 x 1.5 meters of clear floor space.

2. Access play area settings

  1. Open the headset menu and go to Settings > Safety > Define play area.
  2. Select your type of space:
    • Stationary: Recommended for seated or standing use without moving around.
    • Room-scale: Recommended for a dynamic experience that requires defining a safety boundary.

3. Defining play area boundaries

  1. Set floor level
    • Use your hand or controller to push the virtual floor until it aligns with the real one.
  2. Choose configuration type
    • Stationary: The system will automatically define a small boundary around you.
    • Room-scale: You must manually draw your play area boundaries.
  3. Draw play area (if room-scale mode is active)
    • Pinch and hold with your fingers or press the controller trigger to mark the starting point.
    • Move slowly along the floor to draw a virtual perimeter.
    • Make sure to exclude any physical obstacles to avoid accidents.
  4. Set forward-facing direction in VR
    • Position the headset so that menus and notifications are correctly displayed in your field of view.

4. Creating multiple play areas

The Vive Focus Vision allows up to three play areas, useful if you use the headset in different locations.

  1. Put the system to sleep
    • Remove the headset and press the power button to enter sleep mode.
  2. Change location
    • Move to a new location where you want to set up a second play area.
  3. Reconfigure the area
    • Put the headset back on and follow the on-screen instructions to set up the new play area.
  4. Create a third area (optional)
    • Repeat the same steps to set up a third play space.

Note: Only one play area can be active at a time. Before switching to another area, put the headset in sleep mode, then power it back on to restore the new setup.

5. Verification and validation

  • Run a quick test to check if the boundaries are properly defined.
  • Adjust the area if needed by reconfiguring boundary settings in Settings > Safety > Boundary.
  • A virtual wall will appear when you approach the edge of your play space, warning you if you cross it.

By following these steps, you can set up multiple play areas and use the Vive Focus Vision safely, minimizing collision risks with your physical environment.
